Spring 2024 New Interac ALTs

By

Spring departures are fast approaching. This time is both equally exciting and terrifying for many, as it was for me. I remember the time leading up to my departure I did not think I had enough time to finish everything I needed to do, and I definitely didn’t feel prepared.

As a past ALT myself, some of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is to be flexible and go into the experience with an open mind and positive attitude. Not everything will go smoothly or how you may anticipate. Don’t let this get you down.

For many of you, this will be your first time living abroad, teaching, or traveling altogether to a country where the main language isn’t English. Take it in stride, put one foot in front of the other. As one of my favorite characters from my number one show says, “The steps you take don’t need to be big. They just need to take you in the right direction.” -Jemma Simmons, Agents of Shield

The experience of an ALT is what you make it. Be outgoing, social, and positive, and say “YES” to as many opportunities that come your way, even if it may be uncomfortable. These were some of the best experiences during my time as an ALT, the times where I wasn’t overly comfortable before an outing or new experience, in and outside of my schools. But I would have missed out on so much.

Take those steps, say yes, enjoy being outside of your comfort zone! You get out of the experience what you put into it. Enjoy your time in Japan, safe travels, and good luck from the LJCA recruitment team!
